Wipe with vinegar-soaked rag occasionally as you work, to see if bare iron is visible. Can I use a fresh cut lemon slice on the rust if so let it sit or just rub and wipe? Place the cast iron in the oven.
This will keep the pan free of dust, minimizing how often it needs cleaning.
A Anonymous Nov 4, 2017. This should re-season the pan. Get out any remaining traces of salt and potato. I found one buried from a flood for many years, and took it to a company that did sand blasting. Coat the dry pan with cooking oil.

For mild rust, try scrubbing with baking soda. Oil, alkyd, acrylics—check with your paint supplier or product label to ensure it will bond to cast iron and protect it from surface rust.
Instead, simply wipe it clean under hot water after use. Re-season your pan.
Then, place the cast iron in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You are always my go-to reference guide and you haven't let me down yet!
Scrub the skillet well in hot soapy water.
